Eden Seeds - Pumpkin Black Jap
(Cucurbita moschata)
A darker-skinned heirloom selection of the classic Jap (now often called Kent) pumpkin, Black Jap is prized for its excellent storage life, dense orange flesh, and exceptionally rich flavour. Believed to descend from Japanese kabocha types introduced to Australia in the late 1800s, this strain was selected locally for its darker rind and superior keeping qualities.
Fruits are medium to large with deep green to black skin and occasional pale patches and striping. Flesh is very sweet, fine-textured, and perfect for roasting, soups, and long-term storage. Vigorous vines require space and warmth. Plant in full sun after last frost and harvest when skin is fully hardened. Stores well for several months.
