The iHort Q-Plug 40/40 is a premium propagation plug designed to provide reliable structure, moisture retention and excellent root development from seedling through to transplant.
Unlike basic compressed coco plugs, Q-Plugs are made from a stabilised organic propagation medium using a peat and coconut-based blend with a natural binding system. This construction allows each plug to maintain its shape during handling, transplanting and automated propagation processes while allowing developing roots to grow freely through the medium.
The result is a propagation plug that combines the convenient handling and consistency growers look for with the water-holding and nutrient-buffering characteristics of an organic growing medium.
Why Use iHort Q-Plugs?
Q-Plugs are designed to provide a consistent growing environment for propagation. Their engineered structure helps balance moisture retention with air availability around developing roots, making them suitable for a wide range of propagation and growing systems.
The stabilised construction also makes the plugs easy to handle. They can be moved, transplanted and positioned without the same tendency to crumble or lose their shape that can occur with some loose or lightly compressed propagation media.
Q-Plugs can be used for propagating seeds and cuttings before transplanting into soil, coco, hydroponic systems and other growing media.
Q-Plugs vs Traditional Propagation Plugs
A standard coco propagation plug is primarily compressed coir, with its physical characteristics depending on how the material has been processed and manufactured. Q-Plugs take a more engineered approach, using a defined organic propagation blend and binding system to create a stable and consistent plug.
This gives growers a propagation medium that is easy to handle while providing substantial moisture retention and air availability around the developing root zone.
Q-Plugs also differ significantly from stonewool. Stonewool is an inert mineral-fibre medium with virtually no cation exchange capacity, meaning nutrients supplied through irrigation remain much more directly dependent on the grower's nutrient solution and irrigation strategy.
Q-Plugs, by comparison, are an organic-based propagation medium with nutrient-buffering capacity. This provides a different root-zone environment for growers who prefer an organic propagation substrate rather than an inert mineral medium.
Designed for Propagation and Transplanting
The 40/40 Q-Plug format is suitable for growers looking for a clean and consistent way to start seeds or cuttings before moving plants into their next growing medium.
Once roots have developed through the plug, the intact structure makes transplanting straightforward. The plug can be placed directly into a suitable growing medium or growing system, helping minimise disturbance to the developing root system.
For propagation benches, grow tents, hydroponic gardens and commercial growing operations, Q-Plugs offer a practical alternative to loose propagation media and conventional coco or stonewool plugs.
The combination of a stable structure, organic-based growing medium and strong moisture-holding characteristics makes Q-Plugs a versatile choice for both hobby growers and more demanding propagation environments.
