Choosing the right grow light
LED, HPS or fluorescent? How to match a grow light to your space and your plants' stage.
Why light matters most
Light is the engine of photosynthesis, so getting it right is the single biggest factor in indoor results. Two things matter: intensity (how much usable light reaches the canopy) and spectrum (the mix of wavelengths). Match both to your space and growth stage and the rest gets easier.
LED vs HPS
Modern LED fixtures run cooler, draw less power and last longer than HPS, and a good full-spectrum LED handles both veg and flower. HPS is cheaper up front and still flowers strongly, but it adds heat you'll have to manage. For most home setups a quality full-spectrum LED is the easiest, most efficient choice.
Sizing for your space
Match the fixture's rated coverage to your tent footprint, and hang it at the manufacturer's recommended height. Too far away and plants stretch toward the light; too close and you risk light burn. A dimmable fixture gives you room to fine-tune.
Veg vs flower
Seedlings and clones want gentler light, while flowering plants want maximum intensity. If your light dims, start lower and ramp up as plants mature and fill the space.
